Norway exported seafood worth NOK 17.8 billion in September 2026, broadly unchanged from the same month last year, as record salmon volumes offset lower exports of trout and several wild-caught species.

According to the Norwegian Seafood Council, Norway’s seafood exports have reached NOK 133.2 billion so far this year, an increase of NOK 2.3 billion, or 2 per cent, compared with the same period in 2025.

The stronger Norwegian krone continued to weigh on export values. Christian Chramer, CEO of the Norwegian Seafood Council, said Norway recorded its highest-ever monthly salmon export volume in September, while salmon prices also increased in euros and US dollars. However, currency movements and lower volumes of several other species kept the overall export value broadly unchanged.

Farmed fish accounted for NOK 13.7 billion, or 77 per cent, of Norway’s total seafood export value in September. Salmon exports reached a record NOK 13 billion from 165,393 tonnes, with value rising 15 per cent and volume increasing 22 per cent year-on-year.

China emerged as an increasingly important market for Norwegian salmon. Salmon exports to China increased 43 per cent in volume to 11,420 tonnes, while export value rose 38 per cent to NOK 1 billion. Norway’s salmon market share in China reached its highest level in more than 15 years during July and August.

Poland remained Norway’s largest seafood market in September, with exports valued at NOK 2.4 billion, followed by China at NOK 1.4 billion and the US at NOK 1.2 billion. Exports to the US declined 4 per cent, amid lower volumes of fresh salmon fillets, trout, mackerel and king crab.

Several wild-caught species recorded declines. Mackerel exports fell 59 per cent in value to NOK 925 million, while king crab exports dropped 63 per cent to NOK 62 million. Trout exports declined 18 per cent in value to NOK 554 million.

Meanwhile, farmed cod continued to gain ground, accounting for 69 per cent of fresh cod export value in September, highlighting the growing role of aquaculture in Norway’s seafood portfolio.
