Japan's agriculture and environment ministries unveiled draft guidelines aimed at reducing the country's annual food waste by 60 per cent from fiscal 2000 levels by fiscal 2030, according to local reports.
The existing goal seeks to cut food waste at businesses to 2.73 million tonnes by fiscal 2030, but this target has already been surpassed, with waste reduced to 2.36 million tonnes in fiscal 2022, Jiji Press reported. The government now plans to establish a new goal of 2.19 million tonnes by the same deadline.
To achieve this, the government intends to mandate efforts by food businesses to address common practices, such as rejecting products with insufficient time remaining before their best-before dates. Companies will also be encouraged to place orders for such products earlier, the report said.
